American EV Jobs Alliance Praises Gov. Newsom’s New EV Incentive Proposal

Governor Gavin Newsom today released a proposed state budget that includes significant new funding and planned statutory changes to support zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption, reaffirming California’s leadership in keeping electric vehicles affordable and accessible.
The Governor’s proposal includes $200 million in one-time special funds to establish a new light-duty ZEV incentive program. In addition to the new funding, the Administration plans to propose statutory changes to strengthen California’s ZEV market and sustain adoption momentum as federal incentives have been reduced or eliminated.
The American EV Jobs Alliance commends the Governor and his Administration for taking decisive action to keep the EV market strong. For the past year, the organization has called on California to step in with smart, point-of-sale incentives as federal support has faded.
Separate research conducted by EVs for All America in partnership with Atlas Public Policy has identified best practices for maximizing taxpayer return on investment through first-time buyer incentives.
Independent survey research from EVs for All America shows that more than two-thirds of Californians support a $3,500 credit for new and used electric vehicles, and once drivers switch to EVs, most do not return to gas-powered cars.
Mike Murphy, CEO of the American EV Jobs Alliance, issued the following statement:
“EV advocates needed some good news, and Governor Newsom delivered. This is smart policy for American auto manufacturing jobs and for consumers who want to try an EV and quickly learn they are fast, fun to drive, and economical to own.
A $200 million investment will meaningfully help lift EV sales in California, a state that continues to lead on electrification and clean air. We are eager to see the details and look forward to working with the Governor’s office, the Legislature, CARB, and the California Energy Commission to move this forward.
We have worked closely with state leaders and agencies to make the case for practical, consumer-focused incentives, and it is encouraging to see that work reflected in this proposal.”
